What is a Modern Quilt?

A modern quilt is a contemporary take on the traditional art of quilting, characterized by a distinct aesthetic and design philosophy that often breaks away from conventional patterns and techniques.

All submissions will be judged based on Design Elements &
Construction and Techniques which characterise Modern Quilting:

Design Elements

Minimalism: Simplicity in design, often featuring clean lines, solid colors, and uncluttered layouts.

Negative Space: Strategic use of empty space to create visual interest and balance.

Bold Colors and Prints: Use of vibrant colors and African fabric designs.

High Contrast: Juxtaposing light and dark fabrics to create a striking visual effect.

Asymmetry: Breaking away from traditional symmetrical block arrangements.

Alternate Grid Work: Using unique grid layouts or improvisational piecing.

Modern Traditionalism: Updating classic quilt blocks or patterns with a modern twist.

Construction & Techniques:

Improvisational Piecing: Spontaneous piecing without relying on strict patterns.

Modern Quilting Designs: Using straight lines, geometric patterns, or free-motion quilting to complement the modern aesthetic.

Emphasis on Design: Prioritizing the overall design and visual impact over intricate techniques.

AfroModern Quilts

Carole Lyles Shaw was a pioneer of AfroModern quilting, incorporating African fabrics and themes into her modern quilt designs.
